ScoFM (Social Computing Open Framework for Mobile) - Nokia’s MSF (Mobile Social Framework)
I recently read about Nokia’s MSF(Mobile Social Framework), it’s a very good move in the mobile social networking space, I am so glad that Symbian is finally moving toward this direction:
Social Mobile Framework: proposed architecture
I believe that the mobile device is a great “terminal” for all sort of “social networks”, actually before social networking sites became popular, mobile phone network plus the mobile phone devices already formed an “invisible” social network with live persons and “real friends”. The "marriage" between mobile device and social networking service would be a great match and there are so many to do in this space.
iPhone’s approach so far is still not that “officially” defined, different apps talk to different service and bring certain mobile social networking experiences to their users. Google’s Android system move this a little bit further by opening up the system to allow 3rd party apps to add new features and integrate them with existing ones, so we can see Facebook contacts, google talk contacts in the phone’s contacts, however I believe this is just the beginning, more exciting innovations will come in the future. The Windows Phone 7 series just announced a few weeks ago does have deep integration of live and facebook into the contact application, and more over it introduced the “hub” concept to allow social networking related features be grouped together to bring an integrated user experience. I didn’t have chance to play Palm Pre, but from the demo videos I saw, looks like it have similar features like what Android has.
When every platform is trying to put some effort in this direction, the new problem appears – each platform will have their own spec., all platform has to talk to different social networks, and social network is still an emerging market, everyday something new is coming out, who know it will not become the next facebook or twitter?! It’s really valuable to having a “open framework” for the mobile platform, this open framework should be independent to mobile platforms, should be independent to social network platforms, it should remain open while be able to support more new devices and social networks. This is tough! The challenge is not just come from technical side, it’s also from the business side.
Google’s Open social does have some relationship with this idea, however it’s hard to have a solution to address all problems, OpenSocial was focused on an open apps/widget platform for web based social networks, it got extended a lot to be able to compete with its' major competitor “facebook platform/facebook connect”, however I am not expecting too much on what it can bring to the mobile world.
I have some open framework ideas last year, one specifically focus on mobile sector, another focus on enterprise computing sector. Eventually I worked together with two colleagues (Justin and Jason) to turned one of them in to a paper “SCOFE: Social Computing Open Framework for Enterprise” and submitted to Microsoft Thinkweek 2009 cycle, it was one of the top rated papers in both community reviews and expert reviews and it finally became one of the best thinkweek paper in 2009.
The other idea I didn’t have time to go deeper is on the mobile side, I named if ScoFM – Social Computing Open Framework for Mobile. Probably I will do something this year and maybe make it another thinkweek paper for Thinkweek 2010.
Since this is an “open framework” idea, I will open my idea and would wish to hear the feedback from the community. I will blog what I think, what I plan to do, in this blog and hopefully collect some feedback from my readers.
